PROJECT - FARMING

(BERDIKARI PROJECT)

"Berdikari" or self independence is one of our priorities in the community transformation programmes. We have just started a small experimental farm in Kampung Bertang. The kampung folks are keen and are working in the vegetable and fruit trees plots. We provide basic expertise, fertilizes and are helping them to sell the produce. Once successful, we will replicate this to the other kampungs, especially among the youths.

Baking and making of local kuih- muih (cakes) is another project we have just launched in July, 2017. We have invested in some baking utensils, an oven and materials for the classes which are run by our volunteer instructors.  The skills will enable them to be 'self-sufficient' in their jamuan (banquet) and will also be able to sell their cakes and kuih-muih to the other kampungs.

Education

We are partnering with several Rotary Clubs and has launched an ambitious project of sending 30 Orang Asli children in Kampung Bertang to Standard One in 2017. This program will take them from Standard One through to Secondary Form Five - a total commitment of 11 years.

We are extending this ambitious project to cover Kampung Sg. Ruai Tengah, Kampung Sg. Ruai Ulu, Kampung Sg. Kelang.

As of 2018, we are supporting 200 students to attend both primary and secondary schools. Several Rotary Clubs took some load off our shoulder when they undertake to support 30 of the students. Pertubuhan Komuniti Kasih Selangor supports the remaining 170 students.

PREPARING THEM FOR STANDARD ONE

AND EXCELLENce IN THEIR STUDIES

Education is the key to community transformation of the orang asli. We start them young. Our team of more than 50 volunteer teachers and drivers take turns to provide weekly classes for more than 120 children in the 2 tuition centers at Kg. Bertang and Kg. Sg. Ruai.

The Saturday classes prepare the children for admission to standard one while the weekday classes provide tuition for school going children. The government school syllabus is used for the weekday classes.

In between the daily classes the children are provided with refreshments - beverage and biscuits. My Kasih is one of our main sponsors for these refreshments.

infrastructure (constructions)

Basic infrastructure and amenities are always a challenge. Recently we partnered with the Rotary Club - Titiwangsa to build toilets, a kitchen and an additional classroom in Kampung Sg. Kelang. Rotary Club - Titiwangsa provided the finance and materials while the kampung folks provided the labor through gotong-royong for the construction. We helped by co-ordinating this project.

We have started a handicraft project for kampung Bertang whereby we have arranged for the training and upgrading of traditional handicraft skills. We got off to a good start in May, 2017 and are now refining the patterns and colours of the handicraft. We are also helping them to sell the handicraft items.

 SKILLS

COMPUTER

Computer skills are important to open the world of knowledge to the orang asli. We have computer classes in Kampung Sg. Ruai Tengah and lately in Kampung Bertang.

With these new found skills, they can print, scan and photostat documents in the kampungs without the need to go to the nearest towns like Kuala Lipis or Raub. The children will now have access to knowledge at their finger tips

chicken farming

Small chicken farms have been set up in the kampungs. We have harvested 2 batches of chickens comprising 300 birds in each of the batches. More villagers have expressed their interest in chicken farming. We provide the initial seed money and the necessary expertise and logistics.

Health and Hygiene in the kampungs need improving. Head lice, stomach worms, skin ailments, small cuts, and bruises are common problems. We have a medical team, headed by a medical doctor who is making the rounds in these kampungs to check and treat especially the children.

Dental problems and age-related illness also need to be addressed. We need help as we lack qualified personnel and resources.

Solar power for electricity

Let there be light and there was light!

Rotary Club, Temerloh brought solar electricity to Kampung Bertang when solar panels were put up in the kampung to tap on the solar power.

Now children can study in comfort both during the day and night with both fans and lights.

Solar panels will be added and eventually, the whole kampung will be lit up!

Water has been a lingering problem in the kampungs where we are operating. Without clean water for washing and drinking, the general health of the kampungs is affected.

Rotary Club Titiwangsa helped Kampung Sg. Ruai Ulu to install a water harvesting system whereby rain water from the roofs of the surrounding buildings is collected for washing purpose.

An NGO " Do Something Good " helped Kampung Bertang to store clean drinking water to the kampung by repairing a small reservoir at the upper reaches of the nearby river and piping the water to this kampung.
